Scientists at the University of Cambridge have found that a genus of insects have tiny biological butt-gears that synchronise its legs when it jumps. Head through this link to watch the video.

The nymphs (juvenile forms) of the genus Issus, known for its fundamentalist views and attempts to form an Insectic State in the Middle-Leaf, are the bugs at the centre of the study. Interlocking cog-like joints on the juvenile back legs act like a simple gear, rotating together to synchronise both legs when they jump, a feat more difficult to achieve with the nervous system.

Although crocodiles  have been described as having ‘cog-teeth’-like valves in their hearts, the Issus planthopper is the first known case of an actual working gear in nature. Only the juveniles have the gears, losing them on achieving adulthood. Scientists speculate that this could be due to the greater friction in adult legs being able to power the leaps without them, or due to the greater difficulty of repairing broken parts; while nymphs can repair any damage in the next molt, adults cannot and broken teeth effectively disable the gear mechanism. Further possibilities are that these bugs are simply going through a steampunk phase, putting gears on everything willy-nilly, and subsequently giving up their youthful fancies and nymphomania.

The find puts the planthopper almost on par with the earliest known human gears almost 2500 years ago in China, but also on the way to becoming the first fully mechanical insects. I for one welcome our new insect overlords.

Why you shouldn’t trust polls…… Shut-up statistics is cool https://mereconjecture.com/why-you-shouldnt-trust-polls-shut-up-statistics-is-cool/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=why-you-shouldnt-trust-polls-shut-up-statistics-is-cool https://mereconjecture.com/why-you-shouldnt-trust-polls-shut-up-statistics-is-cool/#respond Thu, 19 May 2016 12:31:18 +0000 http://mereconjecture.com/?p=276 Survey

In the 1936 general election of the USA it was Roosevelt vs Landon. With the USA climbing out of the great depression and the potential of the next world war on the horizon, it was an important election. Many media outlets vied to run the biggest and best survey in order to be the one that predicted the result of the election. To that end, the Literary digest sent out 10 million surveys to its readership and had an astonishing 2.4 million replies. The labor of opening 2.4 million letters and processing the results (without computers) was exceptionally expensive, but it would all be worth it because of the huge number of subscriptions they would sell by reporting the results of the election before the election had taken place. From this survey they reported Landon would win by a convincing 55% to 41% and with a sample of 2.4 million how could they be wrong? You undoubtedly see where this story is going; Roosevelt destroyed Landon by 61% to 37%. But a young statistics enthusiast predicted the election correctly with a survey 2% the size of the Literary digest poll, fixing his name in the lexicon of american politics forever – George Gallup.

Gallup did things differently, he would poll people by interview, not send in letters, and he would stratify and weight the poll so that each sub-group of the voting public would be weighted according the census data. That is, if 5% of America was working class and jewish, then Gallup would weight the responses he got from working class jewish people in his polls at 5%. Follow-up research by Squire et al. 1988 found that the biggest mistake the Literary digest had made was relying on the post (an ancient, pre-internet form of communication). This is a bad idea because people who take the time and effort to fill out a form and post it in tend to have different and/or stronger opinions than those who don’t. This makes the sample you receive by post fundamentally different to those who are voting in the actual election. Gallup got around this by interviewing people in a pseudo-random method. Internet review systems all suffer from same kind of error as the Literary digest poll, people with moderate opinions don’t tend to go to the effort to review a business or a movie, but if you lose my package  (FEDEX YOU D*CKS) then I AM GOING TO WRITE A REVIEW! So in short, don’t trust Stuff.co.nz or Dailymail.co.uk internet polls, in fact don’t trust any poll until you read how it is done. If it looks like it is done well, like the Gallup poll, then you can trust it  – but only a little.

Friendly foxes: experiments in domestication https://mereconjecture.com/friendly-foxes-experiments-in-domestication/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=friendly-foxes-experiments-in-domestication https://mereconjecture.com/friendly-foxes-experiments-in-domestication/#respond Mon, 11 Apr 2016 06:41:47 +0000 http://mereconjecture.com/?p=243 There’s one major trait in which domesticated animals differ from their wild counterparts: tameness. In the shift from wolf to dog, from aurochs to cattle, domesticated animals have all become considerably more chill than their forebears, and is only through selective breeding of the tamer, friendlier members of the herd or flock that our modern domesticates show such a marked difference in attitude.

The aurochs, extinct ancestor to modern cattle. An animal so badass its impossible not to paint it it going around goring wolves for funzies.

In 1959, in an attempt to study the effects of selective breeding for ‘tameability’, Dmitry Konstantinovich Belyaev set up an experiment with silver foxes, selecting and breeding the friendliest pairs. The experiment has run for over 60 years now, but within a few generations the foxes began to exhibit behaviour that we would associate most commonly with dogs: they would leap up into researchers arms and lick their faces, come when called, and even wag their tails. They also displayed the ability dogs have to pick up the gestures of humans. The foxes changed physically too, more commonly displaying the patchwork coats that other domesticated animals like dogs, horses, cats, and cattle have, which is uncommon in wild populations. The foxes were also more likely to have floppy ears into adulthood, short or curly tails, and more gracile faces. These puppy-like characteristics, making the foxes appear more juvenile, are what are known as neotenous traits. Although Belyaev’s experiment selected solely for friendlier foxes, they ended up with what we would consider also cuter, and smarter foxes. The experiment strongly suggests that many of the traits that separate dogs from wolves – their ability to follow commands, floppy ears, smaller snouts, curly tails etc. – are all simply side effects of selective breeding for one purpose: a friendlier pet.

If only all experiments had such adorable results.
If only all experiments had such adorable results. Image: Wikimedia Commons.

But Belyaev didn’t just breed friendly foxes. To see the other side of the coin, the most aggressive foxes from each generation were also bred, producing over the years a group of animals that immediately start snarling and hissing the instant researchers enter a room. Bit of a far cry from the fluffy little guys eager for belly rubs you can see here. Lets hope the facility with the evils foxes never sees an escape, triggering a Planet of the Foxes-style apocalypse.

Science has a darn sexist history. When Nicolaas looked down the microscope at human sperm (try not to think about where he got this), he saw a tiny almond shaped head with a long tail. Nicolaas believed that in this almond was infact a tiny little person he called homunculi which is latin for little man. After mating (scientists don’t say sex) this person would then be incubated by the women and slowly grow into a full size baby and eventually into an adult human. Essentially reducing the role of women in procreation into the oven within which the bun is baked. What we know now is that the mother’s DNA is split in two during the egg making process and the father’s DNA is split into two during the sperm making process, so when the sperm enters the egg the resulting embryo has 50% of it’s DNA from the mother and 50% from the father. But that isn’t strictly true. You see we actually have two separate sources of DNA, we have our normal DNA that is in our chromosomes and sits in the middle of the cell (in the nucleus) AND we have have mitochondrial DNA. The mitochondria is small little organelle that sits inside most cell types in the body. It is the power generator of our body and acts like a little battery pack using chemical energy from glucose to power each cell. These mitochondria have their own DNA and this DNA comes solely from your mother. Which means that you aren’t 50% your mother and 50% your father you are actually 50.00057% your mother and 49.99943% your father! Basically that is biology saying screw the patriarchy!

7-UP contained lithium citrate a treatment for bipolar disorder. Awesome work Alfred you nailed it! But he then thought that mania and other psychological disorders were caused by a gout of the brain (not even close).

Gout is caused by uric acid falling out of solution and forming crystal in your joints, it does this because uric acid isn’t very soluble. Our friend Alfred found that lithium treatment can help prevent the build up of these crystals because lithium makes uric acid more soluble (by forming lithium urate). Unfortunately, the levels of lithium required to treat gout are incredibly toxic. But interestingly, he found that people’s mood stabilized on the lithium gout treatment.

This led to the idea that mood disorders have something to do with uric acid (which they don’t). BUT nevertheless, lithium is a very effective treatment of several mood disorders and is still widely used today. So even though Alfred was way off on why it worked, he still found that it did work. In Alfred’s defence we still don’t really know how lithium works today!

Lithium citrate was one of the seven ingredients of 7-UP (one theory postulates that this is where the name comes from) to help stabilize the jitters, because it was actually sold as a medical treatment. Coca-Cola was sold for medicinal use as well. If anyone knows why we have a history of turning medical treatments into popular drinks please tell me, it is weird and concerning.

Dinoturbation – despite what you’ve heard, both male and female dinosaurs did it! https://mereconjecture.com/dinoturbation-despite-what-youve-heard-both-male-and-female-dinosaurs-did-it/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=dinoturbation-despite-what-youve-heard-both-male-and-female-dinosaurs-did-it https://mereconjecture.com/dinoturbation-despite-what-youve-heard-both-male-and-female-dinosaurs-did-it/#respond Sat, 19 Mar 2016 12:17:00 +0000 http://mereconjecture.com/?p=212 Dinoturbation was partly responsible for the rise of flowering plants but what is dinoturbation and why should you care?

Dinoturbation is the massive dinosaur induced destruction of the forests. Take the sauropod the Argentinosaurus as an example. It was discovered in South America (I think in Brazil?) and it is thought to have eaten 2.6 tonnes of vegetation a day, but not only that it probably destroyed even more forest by just walking its giant arse around all day (probably the biggest dinosaur at around 100 tonnes of forest eating machine). Now imagine herds of these and other beasts just leveling forests throughout the world. That is dinoturbation.

What does this have to do with flowers? Well flowers are a recent(ish) invention in the world. They started on a small cliff possibly in China around 160 million years ago and then had to invade the well established conifer (mostly pine) forests of the world. But how could a wee plant get any sun to out compete the dense pine tree (and other conifer) forests which covered the earth? Dinoturbation, that’s how (large forest fires also helped).

Flowering plants (mostly) rely on insects to deliver the pollen directly from plant to plant whereas conifers just pump pollen into the wind and cross their woody fingers. Because of this flowering plants can invest more resources into their seeds without being wasteful, this means flowering plants can either produced loads of seeds and coat the dinopath with their future offspring or they can produce big seeds full of nutrients which can then quickly sprout and grow in a new patch of light out competing the slower growing conifers (think of how fast a bean sprouts grows just after being planted compared to a freaking redwood pine).

This means everywhere the dinosaurs went they would have been leaving trails of beautiful flowers and then the stupid asteroid had to come and ruin it all.

Two options: respect an ancient culture or use mummified cats to fertilize your farm. https://mereconjecture.com/two-options-respect-an-ancient-culture-or-use-mummified-cats-to-fertilize-your-farm/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=two-options-respect-an-ancient-culture-or-use-mummified-cats-to-fertilize-your-farm https://mereconjecture.com/two-options-respect-an-ancient-culture-or-use-mummified-cats-to-fertilize-your-farm/#respond Sat, 19 Mar 2016 12:15:59 +0000 http://mereconjecture.com/?p=208 This one is a crazy story. In the late 19th century an Egyptian farmer found a massive burial site of mummified cats. How massive? We are talking tonnes and tonnes of mummified cats. They built up to such large numbers during the Ptolemaic period through a ritual donation of a mummified cat per visit to the temple (it was sort of a pay one cat to enter deal).

These ancient mummified cats were collected by an Alexandrian merchant who put them on a ship to be sold in England. In Liverpool 9 tonnes of mummified cats were sold at an auction for £5 17s a tonne. They were sold as fertilizer. The cats were more than 2000 years old and their final fate was to be ground up and spread over the English countryside.

As an additional slap in the face to an ancient culture the English auctioneer used a cat skull as the gavel.

Monkeys are left wing socialists and are forming unions!‪ https://mereconjecture.com/monkeys-are-left-wing-socialists-and-are-forming-unions%e2%80%aa/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=monkeys-are-left-wing-socialists-and-are-forming-unions%25e2%2580%25aa https://mereconjecture.com/monkeys-are-left-wing-socialists-and-are-forming-unions%e2%80%aa/#respond Sat, 19 Mar 2016 12:15:07 +0000 http://mereconjecture.com/?p=205 Here is the experiment, monkeys were trained to retrieve a rock and give it to the experimenter and in return they would get a piece of cucumber. This became routine for the monkeys, it was their job.

Then two monkeys were set up side by side and their routine began, retrieve the rock get the cucumber, retrieve the rock get the cucumber, except then one of the monkeys was given a pay rise, they were given grapes for their rocks! This caused a revolt in the lower class monkey who was still on minimum wage. When he got the piece of cucumber he was outraged and threw the cucumber at the scientists. Why should one monkey get paid more than the other monkey? This was unfair! And so he protested!

What was really interesting was when this experiment was repeated in chimpanzees. In a few pairings the one who received the grape refused it until his mate was given a grape for the same job. They had unionized and both gone on protest! I love it!

Six millionths of a gram (about 1/100 the weight of a human leg hair) is enough to kill a mouse (WHO DOES THESE STUDIES?). It kills the mouse (or you) by injecting the toxin PnTx2-6 which stops your nerves from to talking to your muscles by blocking calcium channels. Changes in calcium concentration within your muscle cells by the opening of these channels is what signals the proteins in the cell to pull on each other causing muscle contraction. This is pretty important for muscles like your diaphragm because without nerves activating this muscle you stop breathing. You need to breath to live (true fact).

But in a interesting turn of events while your diaphragm stops working your penis starts to work (if you have one). No it isn’t that you have an odd fetish for spiders, the toxin also happens to cause vasodilation or the widening of your blood vessels. You see an erection works a lot like a party balloon, it is inflatable, but it isn’t inflated by air it is inflated by blood. Both Viagra and PnTx2-6 cause a buildup of a signalling molecule (cGMP) which signals the dilation of the blood vessels causing more blood to flow in and the party balloon to inflate. Researchers are now investigating whether really low concentrations of the spider toxin could be the next Viagra.

Toad licking – it is a thing – but don’t do it. https://mereconjecture.com/toad-licking-it-is-a-thing-but-dont-do-it/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=toad-licking-it-is-a-thing-but-dont-do-it https://mereconjecture.com/toad-licking-it-is-a-thing-but-dont-do-it/#respond Sat, 19 Mar 2016 12:12:05 +0000 http://mereconjecture.com/?p=199 The Colorado River Toad (Incilius alvarius) produces a milky toxin in glands on its shoulders and back which resemble the weapons that Blastoise has (how did Squirtle biologically evolve metal weapons anyway? Because I’m sure Ash didn’t attach them to him when he evolved).

Anyway, this toxin is full of chemicals that can paralyze or kill you, but it also contains 5-MeO-DMT which activates serotonin receptors in your brain. You may of heard of serotonin in the context of it being your “happy neurochemical”. This is a drastic oversimplification that probably came from the fact that Prosac’s mechanism of action is to increase the levels of serotonin in the brain to help reduce the symptoms of depression. But serotonin actually modulates a number of things including addiction, aggression, anxiety, appetite, blood pressure, cardiovascular function, emesis, gastrointestinal function, heart rate, impulsivity, learning, locomotion, memory, mood, nausea, nociception, penile erection, pupil dilation, respiration, sexual behaviour, sleep, sociability, thermoregulation, and vasoconstriction. So not surprisingly substantial activation of the serotonin receptors causes a whole range of things depending on the subtypes of the receptors and how strongly the activation is.

Toad lickers report that the 5-MeO-DMT causes a full body warm sensation, euphoria, and strong auditory hallucinations. Toad lickers also report coldness, loss of the ability to think, feel and see… and rigamortus, because toad licking can kill. This is particularly true when you incorrectly identify the toad, there have been reports of people licking the highly poisonous Cane toad in a case of misidentification. This isn’t surprising because (to be honest) the kinds of people who are looking to lick toads to get high probably do not have the taxonomical skills to correctly identify toads.
